I met a Mom who inspired me today

I met an amazing woman today. We had been trying to meet over the past week to get her children registered in Golden Goose, however we kept missing eachother because she said she was coming from UCC. We are located in Scaraborough, so I have been wondering: why UCC? (isn’t that Upper Canada College; the $30,000 per year school at Avenue Rd. and Lawrence? or does that stand for something else in Toronto? Hmmm). Why would she want to see our Learning Centre if she’s coming from UCC? That’s not really our area. Strange. Okay, but go with it. We finally met today and yes, she was coming from UCC aka: Upper Canada College after picking  up her 12 year old son from school.  I just love hearing people’s stories: it allows me to step outside myself and be part of someone else’s world for a few minutes. This woman is a mother of 5; yes, you read correct;5!! She came from Florida with her husband and 5 kids. I asked her: what brings you to Toronto? She answered: “My son. You see, my son loves to play hockey and last year he came from Florida to Toronto to play in a tournament in Upper Canada College. After the school saw my son play, they asked him for one solid year to move to Toronto on a scholarship to play on the UCC hockey team.” Wow!! “So you just up and moved?” I asked. I was so intrigued. “Yes, we did. It’s been tough because I was almost done with my medical degree in Florida and my husband shut down three private businesses to come here. Now I’ve been looking for a full time job.” Wow! I was inspired and so excited to be listening to this woman. What a sacrifice. Just got up and boom: moved countries. Left their lives, friends, jobs and home  and moved to Toronto, Canada for their son. To give him the opportunity to play hockey in one of the top private schools of Toronto. Talk about sacrifice. I love it. Love the energy, dedication and belief this family had in their son. I love the courage of simply saying ‘yes, lets just go! lets just do it!’ and REALLY doing it. Taking that action and making it work one day at a time. What an incredibly inspiring day. Thank you Akilah for meeting with me today and inspiring me. Best of luck to you 12 year old. You showed me today that your true happiness as a mom, is seeing your children happy and not just saying it, but doing it. Happy Mothers Day 😉
